I have always longed to go to Book Expo America (BEA) in New York, but alas, it does not seem to be in the cards for me. Instead, this year I am participating in Armchair BEA – not quite like being there, but a close second. As a result, it is unlikely that I will posting reviews this week. Instead I am dedicating my time and space to exploring the world of Armchair BEA.
Introduction
1. Please tell us about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? How did you get into blogging?
My blog is fairly new – about 6 months old. I used to work in a bookstore and I miss talking about books all day long. I thought starting a book blog would fill that gap a little and keep me in touch with the world of book.
2. What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you’ve read so far in 2013?
Right now I’m reading The Dark by Claire Mulligan. My favorite book of 2013 so far is The Dinner by Hermann Koch. For the most part I read literary fiction and some non fiction.
3. Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you.
I bought my first sewing machine last week. It’s purple.
4. Name your favorite blog(s) and why they are your favorite.
Literary Hoarders. We have fairly similar tastes in books and they feel like real people to me, friends even.
5. Where in the world are you blogging from?
I’m in Scotland, but I’m from Canada. I sometimes kind of pretend that I’m still there while I’m blogging.
Hello! It’s nice to meet you. π I think it’s awesome that you own a purple sewing machine, and that you’re in Scotland. I would love to visit Scotland someday. I hope you enjoy Armchair BEA!

I just had to let you know I gave a chuckle when I read about the purple sewing machine, it sounds wonderful. If I had a sewing machine I would love it to be purple.
Hope you enjoy the week of Armchair BEA
Seems the purple sewing machine is a hit. Did I mention that I has pink dials on it?
Hi Tanya! I wish I knew how to sew and I would definitely get a purple sewing machine. It’s my favorite color.

A purple sewing machine! How cool is that?
I’m fairly new to the book blog world as well. My one year anniversary is coming up soon though π
I’ve heard so many mixed reviews on The Dinner, it’s made me very curious.
Very nice to meet you!
The Dinner is a book that is hard to put down. Whether or not you like it, it does stimulate some great discussion. My mom and I were completely opposite in our opinions about it, which surprised me since she raised me! Give it a try, it will be worth it.
Yes! The post-bookseller days and that same need to fill the hole left from talking books every day is exactly what got me started blogging as well.
People always thinking working in retail is a drag, but working in a bookstore was my favorite job ever.
Please keep us posted with what you
create with that purple sewing machine.
I have had many sewing machines, but
never seen a purple one.
The purple sewing machine seems to be generating a lot of comments. I read books too you know!! Ha Ha!

So can I come visit you in Scotland? I promise I won’t take up much space. I’ll probably spend most of my time outside reading and/or catching a Scottish man. I’m glad to meet another book blog newbie!
Your blog is so young! Kudos on having a solid blog already. Also, excellent color choice for your sewing machine! I hope you enjoy the week, and thanks for stopping by my blog!
luv purple – amazing to find a purple sewing machine!
i also worked in bookstore for years , lived in the HIghlands and am from canada! how’s that for similar π
are you in scotland for long? and what are you liking there so far?
ps- are you reading for John Mutford’s 6th Canadian Reading CHallenge?
a new one will start July 1st [annually] if you’re interested… and I’ve begun a Reading Scotland Challenge for this year π
We moved to Scotland expecting to stay two years, but the whole family loves it here, so we will stay indefinitely. We live in Edinburgh, but the highlands are divine.
I am doing John Mutford’s Canadian reading challenge and will check out your Scottish one. I’m afraid to admit how little Scottish lit I’ve read, but maybe this will motivate me.
Are you still in Scotland or back in Canada now?
Great to meet you! I’m glad you decided to join in for Armchair BEA. And it seems the NYC BEA will never be in my cards either! I look forward to checking out The Literary Hoarders as well.
Happy Armchair BEA!
Purple is my favorite color, so yay for the purple sewing machine! I’ve always wanted to learn how to use one, but some failed attempts at hand sewing a long time ago kind of discouraged me from ever trying. I took up knitting instead, but I’d still like to give sewing another go one day.
Have a great week!
Welcome to the world of book blogging! It’s so fun! I have to say something about the purple sewing machine, too! I love crafts and have an ancient Singer that my grandmother bought for me. I adore it, it weighs a ton, and it’s a beat of a machine. It’s got it’s own kind of personality. Sounds like between books and sewing you’ll be keeping busy! π Thanks for stopping in to visit our blog!
Ah, I would love to visit Scotland one day!!
The Dinner is definitely on my TBR!
Read The Dinner. Read it now. I cannot stress this enough.
nice meeting you. looks great after only 6 months!
I have been hesitating to read The Dinner, because it sounds like a repeat of The God of Carnage (le dieu du carnage): http://wordsandpeace.com/2012/03/09/i-love-france-15-2012-15-review-le-dieu-du-carnage/. What do you think?
I haven’t read/ watched The God of Carnage which is weird because I love Reza! Based on what I have heard, at first i though the two were quite similar, but then The Dinner takes a turn … and I don’t really think they are that similar, other than the setting ie/ two couples at dinner. If you ever do read The Dinner I would love to know what you think.
ok so I think you convinced me to give it a try
let me know what you think.
will do
I want a purple sewing machine!! I suppose I should learn to sew properly first though. I’ll have to look into The Dinner I’ve never heard of it and I miss reading literary fiction.
You don’t need to know how to properly sew to buy a sewing machine. I bought it first and now I am learning.
Very true…but we already have one. I’m pretty sure it hates me, it works for everyone but me. Anytime I try something immediately goes wrong, lol.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I really haven’t read any classics, that’s crazy right? Hard to believe I know. I will read some of them someday.
