Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the lovelies over at The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is the top ten books of 2014 so far. So far in 2014 I have found very few books that have knocked it out of the ballpark for me, but there have still been some good reads. As always, these are in no particular order and links go back to my original review.
- Landing Gear by Kate Pullinger
- Remember Me Like This by Bret Anthony Johnston
- An Untamed State by Roxane Gay
- Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
You know, everything in me is resisting An Untamed State, because I know it will break my heart, but it is popping up on so many lists I’m beginning to believe it may be worth it. Next time I feel like getting my heart broken, I may reach for it. So happy to see some Meg Wolitzer. I just love her.
While An Untamed Heart is difficult, I did not find it depressing. There is such strength to the central character that is really quite inspirational. Don’t get me wrong, it is a difficult and upsetting read, but it is also gripping and I think positive in the end.
I’m so excited to read Barracuda – it’s going to be a tough one to resist until closer to publication date! And I love that I’m seeing The Interestings on so many lists since it was one of my favorites from last year.
I really liked Barracuda. Maybe that’s because I wasn’t looking that forward to it, but i thought it was brilliant. Tsiolkas is definitely someone I will read again.
These lists are totally reminding me that I NEED to read An Untamed State, especially since Roxane Gay is coming to Toronto later this year (!!!). I have a library copy of The Interestings waiting for me at home too… I must read them ASAP! Thanks for the great list + reviews!
Even if you don’t get An Untamed State read, I think it is your duty to go see Roxane Gay and report back. Everyone will thank you for it.
Great list! I really want to read The Interestings and The Marrying of Chani Kaufman 😀
My TTT
Untamed State is everyyyyywherrrrrre!
Great list! I obviously agree with you about The Marrying of Chani Kaufman, and there are some others on here I would like to read, as well!
Oh hello! What is IT with 2014? Haven’t read too many ones that have knocked it out of the park for me either! Far too many mediocre books read (published in 2014) – there are a number of 2014s I have down to read though, so I’m hoping it changes for the remaining half of this year!
Most of 2014 has been kind of lackluster for me. I don’t know if i’ve been reading the wrong books or what. There are some things out there that I really want to read, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
The Boys In The Boat made it onto my list as well! It’s probably in my top two books so far this year.
I wanted to like The Interestings, but for some reason I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time for me. . .
I’m shocked at how much I liked Boys in the Boat. I don’t normally read about sports.
I have only read one of these. Clearly I need to read faster! I really need to read An Untamed State, but I keep putting it off.
So happy that Australian made the list. Christos Tsiolkas is a great author, I try to read everything he writes.
I just found out that he’s going to be at the Edinburgh book festival. And yes, I will be going to see him.
Exciting, I hope you enjoy the event
How on earth have I not read any Wolitzer? This needs to change, and soon.
Yeah, get on that! But i’ve only read The Interestings.
I need to read faster, too. These look like some terrific books!
Pleased to see The Interestings on your list – that’s also been a fave of mine.
