As you know I recently read, and reviewed No Country by Kaylan Ray. One of the many things that struck me about the novel was the different covers chosen by American and British publishers. Let’s take a look, shall we?
I love the cover of the North American edition. The colors and mosaic pattern draw me in immediately. It is a book I want to pick up.
The Indian and British edition, however, suits the story a little better to me. It communicates that No Country is a historical tale. The birds also give it a seafaring feel. While I don’t like the cover as much, I think it does a much better job at representing the story.
What do you think? Have you read No Country? Which cover appeals to you? And have you seen any other covers for No Country?
Not having read this book, I like the American cover the best.
I haven’t read it and if browsing in a bookshop I’d pick up the edition with the brightly coloured jacket rather than the slightly insipid one. It’s very different and would catch my eye while the other seems a little generic.
I adore the North American version and it’s really beautiful in person. It actually has a bunch of elements that relate to the story (the ship, the knife, etc.) and I agree with Susan that the other version is pretty generic.
I agree that there are various hints to the story in the American cover. But in my head I feel this is a historical novel, and the American cover makes it feel much more contemporary to me.
Yay cover wars! N.American version all the way.
I just read your review – sounds interesting but I either love or hate these sprawling sagas so don’t read them as much as I probably would like. Based on your review, I think if I picked up the first cover I’d be a bit disappointed but maybe I would be pleasantly surprised as I had no saga expectations.
(A non-committal Sunday response here I think!)
I wasn’t hugely fond of this one and I honestly don’t like either cover (neither would inspire me to buy). I feel negative today…
Yikes. Did you review it? I’m going to have to go back and check it out now that I’ve read it.
I did not review it. I was ambivalent enough about it that I didn’t have much to say either way.
I haven’t read the book, but I think I like the British cover better. The mozaic while colorful doesn’t really tell me anything about the book.
