After 12 long years, Judy Blume has come out with another novel for adults, In the Unlikely Event. This has created a lot of conversation about the books of Blume’s that we all grew up with. It’s hard to find anyone who’s awkward years were not impacted in a positive way by at least one of Judy Blume’s many books. For me, Blubber is my all time favorite, with Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret and Then Again Maybe I Won’t following closely behind. I’m always surprised when one of these books does not rank with other fans.
But wait, things just got a little better. Kerry at Etymology of a Bookworm is hosting #BlumeALong! A summer reading frenzy of Judy Blume.
Kick-off: June 15th
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret: June 26th
Summer Sisters: July 17th
Are you in?
Love Margaret and Deenie. Can’t wait to get stuck into Unlikely Event.
I never read Deenie. I wonder why. And I’m saving Unlikely Event for vacation.
Love the old covers, since that’s what I grew up with! I’d say Blubber, because I identified the most with it. The ways kids turn on each other can be terrifying. I was fascinated by Forever because my older sisters were reading it and of course because it was about sex. I still love that it’s this realistic portrayal of a first serious relationship.
Yeah, the old covers give away my age, but I love them.
These books really sum up growing up with you. I have the same list as you, though somehow I did read Deenie.
I recently re-reading Blubber with Sophia and it wasn’t like I remembered it at all but still great.
As a girl with lots of freckles, Freckle Juice was so relatable. I think I was in first or second grade when I read it. Of course, Are You There God and Forever were impact full later. I had always loved how Judy Blume is a common experience for so many, it has let to lots of interesting conversations over the years.
I love that she is just as important and relevant today.
I read them all! But, my favourites were probably the same as yours with the addition of Tiger Eyes. I still have many of my old Judy Blume books, but my kids haven’t been into them like I was. There are so many more choices out there now, I think.
BTW, it’s nice to see your face (you’re not really a cat, after all)! 🙂
Meow.
Judy Blume was a HUGE part of my childhood/adolescence, and I can’t wait to get my hands on her new book! Also, the #BlumeAlong, is going to be SO fun. It’ll be interesting to see how people feel who have never experienced any Blume before!
It’s hard to imagine someone our age encountering Blume for the first time.
Oh come on … I didn’t even wonder which title was going to win 😉
Too easy?
That’s possibly one of the hardest polls I’ve had to do in a long time! (So hard to choose a favourite.)
Sooooooooo….here’s the part where I alienate all the readers: I’ve read almost none of Judy Blume’s work. I have vague recollections of reading the Fudge books and enjoying them. But the rest? Never read them.
I know.
Ewa, I don’t know what to say. First the startling revelation that you don’t like Can Lit, now this?
I know. I feel like I need to hand in my library card.
Or maybe use that library card for good instead of evil.
I picked Are You There … because it’s the one that resonated with me the most, although I think a lot of the sexual stuff went over my head at the time. 🙂
Wow, this quiz was so much harder than it should have been, mostly because I’m going with my memories of reading from a long time ago and I’m scared my younger self would disagree with me! One of my problems is that I don’t dare re-read these books because I’m too scared to find out that they’re different from my memory of them.
