Ah, summer. It doesn’t feel like summer in Scotland these days, but according to the calendar, it is indeed summer. The program for the Edinburgh Book Festival has come out, so that means most of my summer will be dedicated to reading in preparation for it, with a few others thrown in for good measure.
- Villa America by Liza Klaussman. It’s Klaussman, so I’m going to read it anyways, but she’s also coming to Edinburgh! I’ve been waiting to read this for a while, and for once it is available in the UK before it comes out in North America.
- In The Unlikely Event by Judy Blume. Enough said. And she’s not coming to Edinburgh.
- Bradstreet Gate by Robin Kirman. It’s described as a campus murder for fans of Tartt, Eugenides and Wolitzer. Yes please!
- The Way Things Were by Aatish Taseer. He’s coming to EdBookFest and I’m interested. Besides, he learned Sanskrit to write this book and I love me some Sanskrit.
- The Mark and the Void by Paul Murray. Loved Skippy Dies and he’ll be at EdBookFest.
- Man on Fire by Stephen Kelman. Will be appearing at EdBookFest with Paul Murray. And I will likely read Pigeon English as well because it’s already on my desk.
- The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra by Vaseem Khan. Big buzz in India and I’m so glad it’s also being published in the UK.
- The Incarnations by Susan Barker. She’ll be at EdBookFest and I think this book is going to be BIG.
- The Ecliptic by Benjamin Wood. I saw him at EdBookFest when he was promoting his last novel, The Bellweather Revivals. Loved him, loved the book and he’ll be back in Edinburgh this summer.
- This is my wild card. Let’s keep it a mystery for now.
Great list! I’m very, very excited about The Way Things Were – that’s a good one for Cover Wars…this is the first I’m seeing of the other cover. It’s very different from the US version.
Is the American one kind of yellow? I quite like it.
Excellent list! A few new titles in the mix for me to check out. Incarnations has been on my radar, so I’ll be interested to hear how you like it.
I tried to include some lesser known books on my list so it would just be the same old thing.
I’ve had Villa America on my radar (I live all things Fitzgerald, etc) and also considered Bradstreet Gate! That B.G. comparison totally got me, but there were some pretty bad reviews on GR, so I’m waiting to see what people think. I also tried the Judy Blume sample, but it didn’t really grab me so I’m going to wait on that one as well.
I’m going into BG knowing that it probably won’t live up to the comparisons, but it’s still screaming my name.
Ooh… a few good ones I haven’t heard of!
Great list! I have Villa America and The Incarnations on my want-to-read list, can’t wait to read your thoughts on both books 🙂 Happy reading!
My TTT
I have a copy of The Incarnations and Villa America ready to go. I haven’t read anything by either author before, so this will be my introduction.
I’ve not read Susan Barker before either, but the advanced press Incarnations is getting makes me hopeful.
The Incarnations caught my eye on Edelweiss, so I’m curious to hear what you’ll think of it!
Excellent list, Tanya. Some already on my own but thanks for alerting me to Bradstreet Gate, and of course we all want to know what your wild card is! Enjoy the festival.
Great list! Pigeon English was fantastic – I wish more people actually read it. I’ll definitely check out his new one. I didn’t realize Paul Murray had a new one either. Enjoy your summer reads!
I’m so glad to hear you liked Pigeon English. I’ve almost started it so many times.
I just got an ARC of Villa America yesterday. It looks really good. 🙂
Great list! The times I’ve been to Edinburgh I’ve missed Ed Book Fest and was so bummed about it. I look forward to your posts about the event as well as the reviews!
I loved Judy Blume whilst growing up, she was one of my fave Authors 🙂
Fabulous list! You’ve alerted me to “the Mark and the Void”!! Woohoo – Skippy Dies was great! Also can.not.wait. for Villa America either – absolutely loved “Tigers in Red Weather”. Hotly anticipating this one. Added “The Incarnations” today actually! And have the Netgalley book of “Bradstreet Gate”. Your reasons for adding it are the same as mine! 😉
